About Biochar Innovations
At Biochar Innovations we aspire to be the trusted authority in the field of carbon-negative and neutral solutions, offering transformative products based on the unique properties of Biochar to capture carbon and play a pivotal role in reversing the effects of climate change.
Our initial focus is on Arable Farming, where the widespread use of carbon-heavy fertilisers has contributed to climate change and deteriorating soil health. Our mission is inspired and driven by the desire to address the environmental consequences of traditional agricultural practices.
Supported by Innovate UK, and in collaboration with the School of Geosciences at the University of Edinburgh, we have developed a revolutionary carbon-negative fertiliser with global market potential, which combines ancient wisdom with cutting edge science to provide a key to unlocking a more sustainable farming future, reducing carbon footprints, and fostering healthier soil.
Our fertiliser is protected by UK Patent Application Number 2402557.9
When assessing our grant application, comments from Innovate UK included:
“Unique, ground breaking innovation is displayed by the applicants”
“It is likely to disrupt the market and may become the new gold standard”
Carbon Negative Fertiliser
Seeds of change – sowing the future of farming today!
Our vision is to empower farmers and agricultural businesses to play a pivotal role in reversing the adverse effects of climate change revolutionise the agricultural industry by establishing carbon-negative fertilisers as the new standard.
We aim to see a significant reduction in traditional fertiliser use, replaced by our innovative solution, without compromising on crop yield. This tangible outcome will directly contribute to decreased carbon emissions in agriculture, paving the way for a more sustainable and regenerative farming future.
Our patent pending fertiliser is made using a carefully selected mixture of biogenic ingredients, containing no nitrogen, which are granulated in a way that makes them easy to apply through existing farm machinery. The granules are intended to replace traditional Autumn top dressing and to be used in conjunction with mineral nitrogen applications in the Spring.
Once applied, the granules slowly soften and release their mineral nutrients slowly over the growing season, provide a liming effect and replenishing the nutrients utilised by previous crop cycles.
A Life Cycle Analysis carried out by the University of Edinburgh calculates that our fertiliser is strongly carbon negative, saving a minimum 3.2 tonnes of CO2 equivalent for every tonne of Biochar produced and up to 5.2 tonnes of CO2 equivalent if a 50% reduction in the use of traditional mineral fertiliser is achieved.
Our calculations show that by switching to our fertiliser farmers can make their whole cultivation process carbon neutral, whilst maintaining yields and profitability. It can also help secure nature based government support (such as ELMS in the UK) as well as supporting the achievement of farming’s net zero goals.
Biochar-based products
We are also working on a number of other commercially sensitive Biochar based product executions. Further information may be available subject to signing an NDA.
We are interested in developing strategic partnerships with likeminded businesses with a view to licensing our IP. We are also committed to raising “A” round investment to sit alongside further grant funding from Innovate UK to facilitate the building of a demonstration production plant.
